| The Miss World 2009 contestants marked the start of this year's finals with the Miss World Charity Dinner, in aid of the Variety International Children’s Fund. Guests were invited to The Grosvenor House Hotel in London for a fantastic evening of world class entertainment to see this year’s Miss World contestants introduced on stage for the first time. The Charity Auction was the highlight of the night with gifts from competing countries going under the hammer. All contestants had a memorable evening and helped to raise an amazing total of $450,000 for the Variety International Children’s fund. The fund was set up to support medical, nutritional and educational programs worldwide, starting with Haiti. Miss World 2009 Kaiane Aldorino of Gibraltar began her Beauty with a Purpose year attending the 5th Anniversary Gala for Variety Club Japan. Miss World Chairman Julia Morley is International President of Variety, the Children's Charity, and was guest of honour, presenting awards at the celebration. Variety Club Japan has approximately 200 members, and regularly hosts wheelchair sports events and camps for children in track and field, basketball and tennis, training future athletes in the Paralympic games. Masaaki Chiba, Chief Barker of Variety Club Japan has competed in three Paralympic games since Barcelona 1992. He said "Though we have still some way to go, we are doing are very best to raise our stature. We want to convey the wonder of sport to the next generation of children who have these obstacles, something that we have seen first hand." The next stop for Kaiane was Korea, where she had the chance to spend time with the children from Star of the Sea Children’s Home. A foster care centre based in Incheon (the host city of Mr World 2010), the home was established in 1894 and has been caring for children there ever since. There was also a trip to the International Vaccine Institute, a research facility in Seoul, to see the important work done in producing life-saving vaccinations for distribution worldwide. In Vancouver, Miss World took part in the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon. The 44th annual televised event, presented by Variety International, the Children’s Charity raised a final total was $7,431,869. The money raised goes towards specialized equipment, medicines, therapies and other expenses for children in British Columbia. The Variety of Iowa Annual Telethon also saw Kaiane join some 3000 volunteers and more than 50 celebrities and entertainers to help raise $3.1 million for children across the state of Iowa. Miss World Kaiane Aldorino's support of Variety, The Children's Charity continued as special guest of the 19th Variety PROPS Awards, the UK's leading property awards show, with an estimated $600,000 raised during the event hosted by comedian and actor Omid Djalili. Then it was on to the annual Variety World Conference, taking place this year in Hollywood, California. Joining Kaiane were Miss World 2007 Zilin Zhang, Miss World 2002 Azra Akin, Miss World 1980 Kimberley Santos and Mr World Kamal Ibrahim. Events include the Variety Gold Heart Awards, the Children's Lunch, the Variety International Children's Fund Lunch, and the Humanitarian Awards, with Simon Cowell honoured with the prestigious Humanitarian Award. |
